The Temple of Venus and Rome is located at the eastern end of the Roman Forum, on the site of the vestibule to Nero’s Domus Aurea. Begun by Hadrian in 121 to honor Venus and Roma Aeternae, it was the largest temple in Rome, measuring 100 meters by 53 meters. It was dedicated in 135, damaged by fire in 283, and restored in 307 by Maxentius. It was the last active pagan temple in Rome until closed in 391 by Theodosius. It remained intact until 625 when Honorius I removed the bronze roof tiles for the St. Peter’s Baldacchino. The image depicts the cella dedicated to Venus.
