Archaeologists found traces of this fifth-century building six meters beneath the current floor level. The church was altered by Gregory III in the eighth century and finally abandoned in the twelfth century. The present structure, next to a bus depot on the busy Viale Trastevere, was begun in 1123 by John of Crema and reconstructed in 1623 by G. B. Soria under the patronage of Cardinal Scipione Borghese. The last major restoration took place in 1866. The campanile was built in the twelfth century; the spire was added in the sixteenth century.
