The apsidal (west) façade that faces the Piazza dell’Esquilino was completed in 1673. The right-hand section and its dome were designed by Flaminio Ponzio. The central and left sections were designed by Carlo Rainaldi, whose conservative schemes were preferred over the elaborate designs of Bernini. The left-hand dome was designed by Domenico Fontana. The Egyptian Obelisk was brought to this site from the Mausoleum of Augustus.
