The Pantheon is the best preserved monument of ancient Rome. Its austere beauty and harmonious proportions have influenced architects for centuries. Built by Agrippa in 27 b.c., it was damaged by fire in a.d. 80. Hadrian rebuilt it between 118–128, orienting it to the north. Bonaface IV consecrated it as a church in 609. During the reign of the first Christian emperors, it was abandoned and then pillaged by the Goths. In the 1620s, Urban VIII melted down the bronze ceiling of the portico for the Baldacchino at St. Peter’s. Clement XI enlarged the piazza in 1711, commissioning Fillippo Barigioni to add the base for the Obelisk of Ramses the Great, which came to the site from nearby Piazza San Ignazio. Alexander VII lowered the level of the piazza to provide a better view of the architecture. The base of the fountain was built by Giacomo della Porta in 1575.
