The entrance gate to the Citadel was built ca. 1531 by Suleiman I (reigned 1520-1655) over the remains of the Crusader gate. An inscription on the gare praises Suleiman I and quotes Sura 48:1-3 of the Qur’an. From this gate, on December 11, 1917, General Allenby proclaimed his conquest of Jerusalem. The drawbridge linking the gate to the Citadel was removed during the British Mandate.
