The Damascus Gate is one of best examples of Ottoman architecture in Jerusalem. The first gate on this site was built by Herod Agrippa I in ca. 41 c.e. at the time of his Third North Wall. It was rebuilt by Hadrian in 135 as the great northern entrance to Aelia Capitolina. The gate complex was remodeled by the Crusaders and later destroyed either in 1219 by al-Malik al-Mu-azzam or in 1244 by the Turks. No entrance existed on the site until 1537 when Suleiman II built his gate directly over the ancient ruins. The steps and platform leading to the entrance are clearly modern (1967).
