The Tomb of Absalom stands on the western slope of the Kidron Valley. It is thought to have been built in the latter half of the first century b.c.e., the late-Hellenistic Second Temple Period. The Tomb of Absalom and the neighboring tombs are believed to be those of wealthy Jews. The so-called vertical "seam" in the East Wall separates stone work from two periods. To the north of the seam (right) are rough-cut, undressed stones from the Hasmonean or possibly Hellenistic period. The smooth-dressed stones to the left (south) are believed to be Herodian.
