A portion of the Kidron Valley was prophesied to be the site of humanity's ultimate gathering at Judgment Day. This area opposite the eastern wall of the Old City, known as the Valley of Jehosaphat (Yahweh judges), is where "....the nations [are to] bestir themselves, and ...[where He] will sit to judge all the nations round about" (Joel 3:12); where "...the Lord shall roar from Zion and utter His voice from Jerusalem" (Joel 4:16). This prophecy inspired many Jews and Christians to bury their dead on these valley slopes to await the Day of Judgment. The tombstones in the foreground, desecrated in the 1948 war, are as yet unrestored. The Kidron Valley has always formed Jerusalem's eastern border.
