In 1612, Paul V commissioned Flaminio Ponzio to design this elaborate fountain high on the Janiculum Hill. The fountain carries water from the ancient Aqueducts of Trajan originating in Lake Bracciano. The design was a variation of the Fontana dell’Acqua Felice, but with two additional side bays and without sculpture in the central bays. Marble for the fountain was taken from the Roman Forum and the columns from old St. Peter’s. The large basin was designed by Carlo Fontana in 1690. At the right is the Villa Aurelia, now part of the American Academy in Rome.
