Domenico Fontana was commissioned to design this dramatic fountain by Pope Sixtus V (Felice Peretti) in 1585. It was the first “wall fountain” to be built in Rome since ancient times. The statue of Moses in the central bay was designed by Leonardo Sormani in 1588. In the side bays are statues of Aaron by G. della Porta and Gideon by Flaminia Vacca. To the left is the church of S. Maria della Vittoria, designed by Maderno in 1620 with a façade by G. B. Soria.
