This view, looking west to St. Peter’s and the Castel S. Angelo, is one of the most popular depictions of Rome. The Ponte S. Angelo (originally the Pons Aelius or Pons Adrianus) was built by Hadrian in a.d. 134. Subsequent additions include the statues of St. Peter and St. Paul by Clement VII in 1530 and ten statues of angels designed by Bernini in 1688.
