Dedicated in a.d. 113, the 39.8-meter column commemorates Trajan’s victory over the Dacians (now Romania). It is considered the masterpiece of Roman sculptural art. It depicts 100 scenes with 2,500 figures in relief spiraling 200 meters up the column. Ignoring the ancient stricture against burial within the city, Trajan had his ashes interred in the base. In 1587, Sixtus V replaced the bronze statue of Trajan with one of St. Peter. The foreground columns are from the Basilica Ulpia; to the right is SS. Nome di Maria.
