In a.d. 72, on the lake of Nero’s Golden House, Vespasian built the largest Roman amphitheater in the world. The name (colosseo, in Italian) came either from the 35-meter-high statue of Nero that stood to the west, or the actual size of the building itself, 527 meters in diameter and 57 meters high.
