The Column of Phocas of the left, the last of the Forum monuments, was erected in 608 by Smaragdus to honor his centurion, Phocas, who had become Emperor of Byzantium. It also commemorated the emperor’s gift of the Pantheon to Boniface IV. The 13.5-meter fluted Corinthian column was thought to have been taken from an imperial-era building. At the far left is a corner of the Palazzo Senatorio, built in 1143 on the ruins of the Tabularium, which dates from 78 b.c.
