The construction of these magnificent structures was begun in a.d. 35 by Caligula and completed in 49 by Claudius. The aqueducts were 69 km in length, only 15 km of which were above ground. They carried water from springs in Cerulea and Curtia. They remain isolated in the Campagna Romana, which can be reached by taking the Via Tuscolana southeast, turning south on Via Quadraro, and then west on Vicolo Aquadetto Felice. An early morning or late afternoon walk through these ruins is among the most inspiring and memorable of experiences in Rome.
